Wool Washing Plant in Tagamanent
Each year, thousands of tons of wool from sheep shearing are produced in Catalonia, but many small-scale farmers struggle to find a viable outlet for it. Although wool washing plants have operated successfully for years, the minimum volume requirements or distance often make these services inaccessible to small producers, leaving the wool unused and devalued.
The wool produced locally is typically coarse fiber, with potential applications in areas such as green building, the textile industry, crafts, and more. However, without a small-scale collection and processing system, this resource is often lost or undervalued.
Recovery of sheared wool from small producers to revalue it, turning waste into a valuable resource.
In this context, the Tagamanent City Council, with support from the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC) and the Bioboost project accelerator, have promoted the creation of a small-scale wool washing plant. The facility is designed to serve small farmers in the region and help bring value to a natural, local material.
Girbau LAB is involved by defining and adapting the technical solution for the wool washing and drying process, selecting the most suitable equipment, and tailoring the technology to the project’s specific needs.
The aim is to reactivate a key first step in the value chain: the washing and drying of sheared wool, to facilitate further transformation and open the door to new uses and value circuits.
We are collaborating on this project because it fully aligns with our vision of innovation committed to sustainability, circular economy, and local engagement.
A technical solution tailored to the territory to activate local and circular value chains based on wool.
This initiative represents an opportunity for Girbau LAB to apply our expertise in industrial washing in a new context and address a challenge that demands partnerships, creativity, and long-term vision. Projects like this are not only a bet on technological innovation but also a firm commitment to activating new local dynamics with social and environmental value.
